Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
Growing up, I preferred a packed lunch because it felt like a special treat. My favorite thing to find in my lunch was a personal bag of Doritos! However, 99% of the time, I had to purchase school lunch. The strangest thing on the school menu was “ants on a log,” celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins. I tried it once and still dislike that combination to this day!
If I could create one school lunch item from scratch, it would be turkey turnovers. These were the best things my high school offered and one of the few made from scratch. Anyone who attended Hannibal High School will tell you about those delightful meat-filled pastries!
If I could create the ultimate school lunch menu, it would include pizza, burgers, and nuggets. Give the kids what they want!
My secret to the ultimate lunchbox meal is to make it close to the day it’s eaten. This is especially important if the sandwich includes lettuce, tomato, or onion.
Packing school lunches and meal prepping as adults are similar, requiring proper portioning. To ensure a well-balanced and nutritious meal, focus on including more protein, fruits, and vegetables. Keep starches to a minimum.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Cambridge Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
