Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Anthony Smaldino, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Finding Balance and Purpose

As Culinary Director at The Cambridge, I was inspired to work in senior living because it offers meaningful work and a healthy work-life balance. Competitive pay and reasonable hours make it possible to do the work I love. They also allow time with the people I love.

Culinary in senior living still offers creativity, teamwork, and the satisfaction of preparing great food. It also brings the reward of serving residents who become familiar faces. Over time, those daily interactions make the work feel personal.

Residents have taught me that life is short. Their stories are reminders to appreciate the time we have. They also remind me to hug my mom and dad as much as possible.

One favorite tradition is brunch. Brunch gives the culinary team a chance to create something special. It brings residents together around good food, conversation, and a shared experience.

Serving With Patience and Heart

Success in culinary in senior living takes patience and a big heart. Every resident has different preferences, routines, and needs. A strong culinary team listens, adapts, and responds with care.

Patience matters during busy services and everyday conversations. A big heart matters just as much. Together, those qualities help create a dining experience where residents feel respected and valued.

One moment that showed the impact of this work came after a brunch. A resident wrote a thank-you card for the meal I had prepared. That simple gesture meant a lot.

It showed that the food, effort, and care behind the meal had made a difference. Moments like that are powerful reminders. A meal can become a memory, and a kind note can affirm the purpose behind the work.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
