Choosing a “Word of the Year” is more than a fun tradition. It is a powerful tool for focus and growth at The Cambridge Senior Living. One word can guide decisions, inspire action, and unite teams around a shared purpose. Reflecting on the word chosen for the year helps reveal how it shaped culture, strengthened connections, and supported meaningful experiences for residents and staff. This end-of-year review also allows time to celebrate successes, learn from challenges, and prepare for continued progress.
Our 2025 Word of the Year, embrace, guided our community through a year of learning, adaptation, and growth. We embraced major interior and exterior renovations while adjusting to evolving expectations. Department heads rose to challenges and achieved strong evaluations through perseverance and teamwork. As a unified occupancy team, we improved sales routines, strengthened communication, and leaned on one another more consistently. Embracing accountability helped foster honest conversations when gaps appeared and encouraged openness to experimentation, which ultimately improved outcomes.

Resident engagement became one of our most notable growth areas. Once a source of discouragement, it is now consistently ranked first or within the top five companywide each month. This progress reflected a renewed embrace of the occupancy team’s role and stronger, more reliable sales practices. Improvements were seen across tour interactions, phone etiquette, and retention conversations. As a result, the team gained a clearer understanding of how occupancy impacts overall operational success.
Team culture also improved in meaningful ways. Direct, interpersonal communication grew stronger, both in frequency and quality. Dependability increased as team members became more reliable in their roles and more supportive of one another. These changes created a more cohesive and confident workplace.

Most importantly, the year taught us the value of perseverance. Many team members learned to move past fear-based or emotional reactions when facing challenges, feedback, or unfamiliar situations. Instead of retreating, they embraced steady progress and long-term commitment. Watching individuals shift from reaction to resilience, and ultimately reach their goals, was inspiring. While growth continues, this mindset of determination and follow-through is a lesson we plan to carry into the year ahead.

As we reflect on the impact of our Word of the Year at The Cambridge Senior Living, it is clear that one simple concept can drive meaningful change. Embrace guided priorities, strengthened community, and reinforced the values that matter most. By reviewing both actions and outcomes, the team can celebrate progress while identifying opportunities for continued growth. One word truly can make a difference when it is lived every day.
