Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Tiffany Henderson, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at The Cambridge Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating a True Sense of Belonging

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships and helps residents feel like they belong.

From my perspective, every interaction becomes a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also benefit from the emotional and social comfort that comes from genuine human connection.

To me, community in senior living means creating a culture that supports both the social and physical well-being of every resident. Building these connections prevents isolation and helps each person feel welcome. Strong relationships foster joy, engagement, and purpose, turning our community into a place that feels like home.

I encourage residents to connect with one another through weekly socials, outings, and friendly challenges. These events promote laughter, teamwork, and fun. They also help residents form bonds and create lasting friendships.

Strengthening Ties Inside and Outside Our Community

We also maintain strong connections with our surrounding neighborhood. Intergenerational partnerships with Cowden Elementary, Drury College, and several local churches bring meaningful activity to our residents. Together, we host Story Corner, caroling, and interactive events like Beachball. These moments bring joy and energy to residents while strengthening our ties with the wider community.

One of my favorite events is our weekly Happy Hour. Residents enjoy live music, conversation, and camaraderie in a relaxed setting. It’s always a highlight of the week and a wonderful chance for everyone to unwind and connect.

To welcome new residents, our Welcome Committee greets each person with a warm smile, a thoughtful welcome basket, and genuine conversation. Every new resident completes a social profile. Our resident ambassadors use that information to pair them with like-minded lunch partners. From day one, we make sure each person feels comfortable, included, and truly part of our family.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful moment enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at The Cambridge Senior Living, I’ve seen how thoughtful efforts to build these relationships can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating memories that residents and families treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events. We build a vibrant and supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
