Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.
One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.
Their willingness to reach out matters. They share their experiences and invite others into community life. In doing so, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.
As Resident Services Director at Cambridge Senior Living, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.
A successful move-in experience helps a new resident feel connected in everyday life. A resident may attend events with new friends. They may enjoy meals in the restaurant. Team members may begin recognizing them by name. These moments show that the resident is beginning to feel at home.
That sense of belonging starts with preparation. Resident Ambassadors are kept informed about move-in dates. They often meet new residents before move-in day during a tour. By the time the resident arrives, a familiar face may already be waiting.
Ambassadors also help new residents feel prepared. They share the calendar of events and visit apartments. They meet families and invite residents to meals and activities. They offer advice, answer questions, and sometimes simply sit with someone. That steady presence can help a new resident feel supported instead of unsure.
Some of the most meaningful welcomes are small acts of care. An ambassador may offer to bring coffee and snacks. They may also walk a new resident around the community during move-in. These gestures can make a big difference. They help residents feel noticed, cared for, and less alone.
One meaningful moment happened during a tour. A resident shared why she chose the community. She said the residents were open and friendly. Everyone talked to her and smiled. That welcome stayed with her. She felt included as soon as she walked through the doors. That feeling helped her know she had found the right place.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they are experiencing a similar life change. Team members provide important support. Still, fellow residents can relate on a different level. They understand what it feels like to move, adjust, and begin again.
Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of the community by staying active. They promote the social environment and encourage others to get involved. Through friendliness, invitations, and support, they create positive camaraderie. They also help residents feel welcomed, recognized, and connected.
Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
