As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.
After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at The Cambridge Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.
For the spring refresh, my Executive Director and I walk the entire property. We try to view it through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time. Because the property has improved so much over the years, we can easily overlook small details.
To gain fresh insight, we invited a few resident ambassadors to walk with us last year. They shared their observations and helped us see the property from another perspective. During the walkthrough, we organize needs into three categories: critical, short-term, and long-term.

A recent seasonal project addressed a major drainage issue on the northeast side of the property. We installed a 150-foot French drain, which helped resolve the problem.
The project took place as Focal Pointe joined Arrow as a partner. We used the job as an opportunity to evaluate whether their work aligned with our company standards. Although the project affected a few backyards, strong communication helped the work move as smoothly as possible.
Our process follows the KISS approach: keep it simple. We focus on routine walkthroughs and a clear checklist. We divide the property into four sections: north, east, south, and west.
My Executive Director and I track each item in an Excel spreadsheet. This creates accountability and helps ensure nothing gets missed. Staying in close communication with Focal Pointe also keeps the process organized and efficient.
One of our biggest ongoing issues is trash blowing onto the property. We addressed part of the problem by installing a 160-foot fence along the front, south side of the property. This helps block trash from the neighboring grocery store.
We also worked with Focal Pointe to explore a more permanent solution for the remaining issue. However, much of the trash comes from multiple businesses across the street. That limits what we can control. To manage it, the team completes trash pickup around the property almost daily.
Going forward, we want to be more proactive before the season begins. This includes completing walkthroughs earlier with the landscaping company. It also means having a clear plan in place before spring, instead of reacting as issues appear.
It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure The Cambridge Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
